What if there was a way you could get a better result, in less time and for a lower cost

There is so much commercial vinyl flooring in New Zealand.  And even though it is constantly maintained, there comes a time where it is not up to scratch any more and it needs to be replaced, OR DOES IT????

The cost of removal, repreparation of the surface and installing takes more time and more money.  And that is before we look at our environmental footprint.

Anyway you cut it, vinyl flooring is not an environmental choice – there are no stars for installing vinyl.  From the chemicals used to manufacture, the transport, the installation, the cleaning, polishing and care, the waste and finally dumping at the end of its’ life.

Floor preparation - vinyl removal

Introducing Bona Resilient

The clever chemists at Bona have developed a coating system especially for vinyl, lino and rubber flooring.  After a through surface preparation process, their coating molecularly bonds to the surface as if it was part of the original product from the factory.  Except – it preforms better than the original product.

You see commercial vinyl typically has a 200-600 micron heavy duty clear wear layer on it, and that preforms pretty well.  But it does wear and show scuffs and scratches that can hold dirt and grime.  So you apply protective coatings like wax or polymer polishes.  These protective coatings require constant removal and reapplication (which can add up to quite a large cost over time).

Anyway back to why this system makes your vinyl floor better than it came from the factory.

The Bona system is finished with 2 clear coats of highly abrasion resistant waterborne polyurethane.  Compared to waxes and polish, it offers far superior abrasion resistance and is far easier to clean.

Because of the performance of this top coating, Bona guarantee it for 5 years – without the need for periodic polishing or waxing.  And after 5 years, we can lightly abrade the surface an apply another coat and it’s warrantied for another 5 years. 3

2 options - Restore or Re-colour

With the Bona resilient system we can either prepare and clear coat (retain the existing vinyl colour and design/style), Or colour coat and create a new look.

Restore

The restore system involves stripping off any wax or polish that may have been used on the floor.

The surface is then thoroughly fine abraded to ensure the coating has maximum bonding to the surface.

Then 2 clear coats of Bona Pure are applied to create the new high performance wear surface.

Re-Colour or Renew

The renew system involves stripping off any wax or polish that may have been used on the floor.

The surface is then thoroughly fine abraded to ensure the coating has maximum bonding to the surface.

Once dry, the first colour coat is applied.  If the change is from a dark or strong design, then a second colour coat may be required.

While this coat is still wet, a fine colour blend flake is applied and will adhere into the coating.

Once this coat dries tha surface is lightly abraded to smooth the surface (leaves a slight texture that aids slip resistance and hides prior damage.

Then 2 clear coats of Bona Pure are applied to create the new high performance wear surface.

Beyond changing the base colour of the floor, we can also add fine colour flakes or chip to the surface.

The flakes serve 2 main purposes

  1. They add another visual element to the floor and make it interesting (they can also distract from minor defect such as repairs and damage).
  2. They can increase the slip resistance of the floor.  For added slip resistance, flake can be broadcast into the first colour coat and then be coated over for additional texture.
Flake can be applied from a very light sprinkle to a more concentrated dispersion. (standard flake colours below)

Bona Resilient is being used around the world to restore and renew vinyl, Lino and rubber flooring

Oslo National Museum, Norway

In June 2022 the new National Museum will open in Oslo. This modern art, architecture, and design museum is the Nordic Region’s largest museum and is being constructed as a vibrant urban space for visitors to convene, view and learn.

During the museum’s construction, the new vinyl flooring was severely damaged. Rather than replacing the new flooring, the facility tapped Bona’s Resilient Solution. In addition to considerable cost savings, the renewal was eco-friendly. By renewing rather than replacing the flooring surface, Bona and the Oslo National Museum prevented nearly 63,000 pounds (30 tons) of carbon dioxide from being emitted into the environment.

Hospital Operating Room Floor Transformation for Centennial Hills, Texas

The labor and delivery room floor at Centennial Hills Hospital in Las Vegas was well-worn after years of heavy foot traffic, shifting and moving of equipment, and the various chemicals used to clean the 500-square-foot sheet vinyl surface. Several employees even had slip and fall incidents on slick areas of the floor.

Replacing the floor would mean three days of downtime in this busy labor and delivery area. Bona teamed up with Centennial Hills to offer a faster, more sustainable solution than replacement: renewal of the existing surface with a resilient flooring product solution.

Resilient flooring is a popular material used by health care facilities because it is efficient to install, easy to clean, and safe for those who utilize it. This renewal option also means minimal disturbance to patients and staff in nearby areas of the facility.

“[Bona’s new resilient products] are simple, versatile, and durable, and they allow us to provide solutions in areas where we previously could not,” says Taylor Weston with Brady Industries, the hospital’s flooring project team.

The hospital team, as well as Brady Industries, were pleased with the results, which included:

  • A brilliant and colorful flooring surface. The hospital administrators chose a combination of three-color chips to give extra design and texture to the floor.
  • Safe surfaces for employees to work on. The floor was finished with a mixture that included an anti-slip additive for increased durability and protection against slips and falls. The medical team noticed a distinct difference in the grip of the floor.
  • Minimal downtime and more flexibility to treat patients. The hospital staff was back to work in the room within 18 hours (which included only five project labor hours) instead of the three-day timeframe expected with replacing the surface. The hospital realized a 75% labor savings and avoided losing thousands of dollars from closing the room for several days.

Centennial Hills was respectful to the environment, its patients, and staff, and its budget, by choosing to renew the floor instead of replacing it.

Havasu Regional Medical Center Revolutionizes its Flooring

Arizona-based Havasu Regional Medical Center turned to Bona for an upgrade to its old, worn resilient flooring. The medical facility sought a cost-effective solution to revitalize the flooring and keep it in compliance for safety. Instead of replacing the flooring, the facilities team chose to renew with the Bona Commercial System Resilient Floor Solution and saved $20,000 (in addition to labor cost savings). The entire renovation project took 18 hours versus the expected 72+ hours for new floor installation.

“I think this product is going to revolutionize the way hospitals manage and maintain their floors,” says Mark Mayberry, security and emergency management coordinator at Lifepoint Health, owner and operator of the Havasu facility.
